Don't forget to have a good time

Oh man, I know I should save these for a day that I can’t think of anything else to write, but I have to share these with you:

1. Jonatha Brooke, The Works
I am a fool for Woodie Guthrie, so it’s no surprise that I love this CD, but I think you will too. She was given permission to go through his unfinished songs and write music for his lyrics, and there some really lovely songs. “Sweetest Angel” and “New Star”(my two favorites) can be heard here.

2. Ani Difranco, Present/Infant (from Red Letter Year)
It’s also not a surprise that I love me some Ani, but this album wasn’t what I was expecting, and this has been sitting, unlistened to, in my iTunes for over a month now. This song came up today and I was blown away. This is something I struggle with daily – my own insecurities about my body, and my fear of passing them on to my girls – and Ani has a way of singing that makes me want to stand up and change the world. You can listen to the entire song in the free player on the site, or hopefully this video will work (I hope there isn’t a commerical before hand, but it’s AOL, so prepare yourself)

lately i’ve been glaring into mirrors
picking myself apart
you’d think at my age i’d of thought
of something better to do
than making insecurity into a full-time job
making insecurity into art
and i fear my life will be over
and i will have never lived unfettered
always glaring into mirrors
mad i don’t look better

but now here is this tiny baby
and they say she looks just like me
and she is smiling at me
with that present infant glee
and yes i will defend
to the ends of the earth
her perfect right to be

so i’m beginning to see some problems
with the ongoing work of my mind
and i’ve got myself a new mantra
it says: “don’t forget to have a good time”
don’t let the sellers of stuff power enough
to rob you of your grace
love is all over the place

there’s nothing wrong with your face
love is all over the place
there’s nothing wrong with your face
